Tooth & Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Banff
Safe, comfortable extractions when you need them
WhenisaToothExtractionNeeded?
At Rocky Mountain Dental, we always try to save your natural teeth first. However, there are situations where extraction is the best option to protect your overall oral health. A tooth may need to be removed if it is severely decayed, badly fractured, affected by advanced gum disease, or causing crowding that affects your bite and alignment.
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the most commonly extracted teeth. They typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, and many people do not have enough room in their jaw for these teeth to come in properly.
ReasonsYouMayNeedanExtraction
Extraction is recommended when other treatments cannot restore the tooth or when leaving it in place would put your oral health at risk.
Severe Decay or Damage
When a tooth is too badly decayed or fractured to be restored with a filling, crown, or other treatment, extraction prevents the spread of infection.
Advanced Gum Disease
Periodontitis can cause bone loss around the teeth, making them loose. Extraction may be necessary when the supporting structures are too compromised.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth that are trapped beneath the gum or growing at an angle can cause pain, infection, cysts, and damage to neighbouring teeth.
Crowding and Orthodontics
Sometimes teeth need to be removed to create space for proper alignment during orthodontic treatment such as braces or Invisalign.
Infection or Abscess
If infection at the root of a tooth cannot be resolved with antibiotics or root canal therapy, extraction may be the safest option.
Preparing for Dentures
In some cases, remaining teeth need to be extracted to prepare for complete or partial dentures that restore function and appearance.
Evaluation and X-Rays
We begin with a thorough examination and digital X-rays to assess the tooth, its roots, and the surrounding bone structure. This helps us plan the safest and most comfortable approach.
Anaesthesia and Comfort
The area around the tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia so you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. We discuss sedation options if needed for anxious patients.
Tooth Removal
For a simple extraction, the tooth is gently loosened and removed. For surgical extractions, such as impacted wisdom teeth, a small incision may be made to access the tooth beneath the gum.
Post-Extraction Care
We place gauze over the extraction site to help a blood clot form. You receive detailed aftercare instructions covering pain management, diet, and what to watch for during recovery.
Follow-Up and Replacement Options
We schedule a follow-up to check your healing and discuss tooth replacement options if needed, such as dental implants, bridges, or dentures.
TheExtractionProcess
Whether you need a simple extraction or a surgical wisdom tooth removal, our team at Rocky Mountain Dental ensures you are informed and comfortable every step of the way.
AftercareandRecovery
Proper aftercare is essential for a smooth and speedy recovery. Follow these guidelines to help your extraction site heal properly.
Bite gently on the gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure to help control bleeding
Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off during the first 24 hours
Eat soft foods such as yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes for the first few days
Do not use a straw, spit forcefully, or smoke for at least 72 hours to avoid dislodging the blood clot
Rinse gently with warm salt water after the first 24 hours to keep the area clean
Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed
Rest and avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 24 to 48 hours after the extraction
